St Anthony Hospital Airway Lab - Enduring 2025

This course is a review of best practices for intubation in the emergency department setting. We will focus on troubleshooting endotracheal tube delivery and optimizing technique for performing laryngoscopy, both video and direct.

There will also be a case discussion and discussion of best practices for awake intubation.

Our hands on skills will focus on practicing video laryngoscopy with a hyperangulated blade, bougie use with a standard geometry laryngoscope, surgical cricothyrotomy, awake intubation using flexible endoscope and intubating through a supraglottic airway.

Learning Objectives

Explain evidence behind VL improving first pass success in critically ill patients undergoing tracheal intubation by relatively inexperienced intubators

Optimize topical anesthesia application prior to awake flexible endoscopic intubation (FEI) and train in best practices for FEI

Discuss ease of tube delivery with restricted glottic view

Apply “scalpel, finger, bougie” technique to perform surgical airway

Discuss knowledge base on SALAD method and best ways to utilize it in airway management.
