USACS EM & CC Simulation Based Skills Lab - Akron, OH

The USACS Simulation Based EM & CC Skills Lab is a procedure and simulation-based course specially designed to focus on wound care management, non-invasive orthopedic procedures, and lumbar puncture skills. The objectives for each procedure include learning the indications, contraindications, equipment, technique, complications, sites, post procedure follow up and pearls needed to perform the procedures competently. Procedures will be practiced in a controlled setting on high-fidelity task trainers and through simulation experiences. The participants will be divided into small groups of 5-6 students with direct supervision from highly skilled instructors.  Participants will have ample opportunity for guided practice of all procedures reviewed. We will provide 2 full days of procedural instruction / practice in the simulation lab.
 
Each participant will demonstrate proficiency in each of the following procedures:
  • Endotracheal intubation with an airway station with manikin intubation using adult and pediatric models, demonstration of airway adjuncts (King Vision, Glideslope, LMA, Combitube I-gel, SALT)
  • Surgical airway management
  • Needle thoracostomy
  • Chest tube thoracostomy
  • Central venous access
  • Lumbar puncture
  • Arthrocentesis
  • Intra-osseous cannulation
  • Wound care: I&D abscesses, suture repair
  • Peripheral nerve blocks (facial, wrist, ankle, femoral)
  • Ultrasound Techniques, including vascular access, peripheral nerve blocks, and FAST exams.

Each participant will demonstrate proficiency in each of the following high risk clinical scenarios:

  • Unexplained tachycardia
  • Non-traumatic back pain
  • Pediatric bronchiolitis
  • Trauma
  • Abdominal pain
  • Eye pain
  • Acute leg pain
  • Chest pain
  • Dizziness
  • Acute Headache
  • Syncope
  • Tachyarrhythmia
  • Infected Kidney Stones

Additional Bonus Content included:  Documentation pearls with Dr. Casey Collins, Risk and CMT utilization with Dr. John Bedolla, APP Supervision and SOP with Krisi Gindlesperger PA-C, an ACLS Review and EKG interpretation with Tiffany Andrews NP.

Learning Objectives

At the conclusion of this program, participants will be able to:

  • Providers will be able to define the indications and contraindications in all identified skills.
  • Providers will be able to demonstrate competency in all identified skills.
  • Providers will be able to identify the common complications and management of those complications in all identified skills.
  • Providers will be able to demonstrate knowledge of the correct use of the equipment necessary to perform each of these skilled procedures.
  • Providers will be able to recognize and initiate appropriate management in high-risk clinical scenarios.
