MARY JO SNYDER, RN, MS, MBA – COURSE CO-DIRECTOR
Mary Jo Snyder, RN, MS, MBA – Course Co-Director is currently the President of Echo Consulting Group, LLC. She has over 25 years of experience in healthcare administration and consulting in operational performance with a specialty in emergency medicine and hospital turnaround. Snyder also served as Director of Policy Initiatives, The Nursing Institute, Chicago, Illinois creating a strategic plan for the implementation and operation of professional development programming including enhanced technology integration for distance learning. She holds a Master of Business Administration and a Master of Science in Nursing from the University of Illinois at Chicago.
KEVIN KLAUER, DO, E JD, FACEP - COURSE CO-DIRECTOR
Kevin Klauer, DO, E JD, FACEP – Course Co-Director is the Chief Medical Officer with Emergency Medicine Physicians (EMP) in Canton, Ohio. In addition, he serves on the Board of Directors for EMP and their malpractice insurance company. He is also the Director of EMP's educational division, The Center for Emergency Medical Education. He is an Assistant Clinical Professor for MSUCOM. Dr. Klauer also serves as Editor in Chief of Emergency Physicians Monthly publication.
KRISTEN G. ENGEL, MD
Kirsten G. Engel, MD is currently an attending emergency physician and clinical researcher at Northwestern University. Her primary research focus is patient-provider communication and its impact on patient outcomes, including satisfaction, comprehension, and adherence. Kirsten is also interested in palliative and end-of-life care in the emergency department and has conducted research on Family-Witnessed Resuscitation. She is actively involved in EPEC-EM (Education in Palliative and End-of-life Care – Emergency Medicine) and has served as a master facilitator and core faculty member for this project. Kirsten attended Harvard Medical School, was a resident at the University of Michigan and St Joseph Mercy Hospitals in Ann Arbor, and completed a clinical research fellowship in the Robert Wood Johnson Clinical Scholars Program in 2004.
DEENA BRECHER, RN, APRN, MSN, CEN, CPEN, ACNS-BC
Deena Brecher, RN, APRN, MSN, CEN, CPEN, ACNS-BC is currently serving as a member of the Emergency Nurses Association (ENA) Board of Directors. She has been the clinical nurse specialist in the emergency department at the Nemours/Alfred I. duPont hospital for the last 5 years. In this role she has worked to advance nursing processes through the use of evidence- based practice and also by applying the scope and standards of emergency nursing. Deena served on the BCEN pediatric expert panel from 2006-2008, and was a BCEN item writer and a member of the Exam Construction and Review Committee from 2008-2010.
Additionally, Brecher supported the nursing department through her leadership roles in Nursing Shared Governance. Elected by her peers, she served as the chair of the Quality Council for a 2- year term. She is currently the Nursing Professional Development team’s elected representative to the Congress.
Deena has received numerous nursing awards including the Nemours nursing "Image of Nursing" award and the Micromedix/ENAF Best Nursing Abstract Award for her abstract titled "The Reliability and Validity of the Emergency Severity Index in the Pediatric Population".
ESTRELLA P. EVANGELISTA, DNP, MEd, BSN, RN, CNL
Estrella P. Evangelista, DNP, MEd, BSN, RN, CNL is working part time as a clinical nurse in the Emergency Department at Valley Hospital Medical Center in Las Vegas, NV. She also works as an academic and clinical adjunct faculty at a BSN and Masters level nursing education program. She has over 20 years of critical care nursing experience and has also worked as a nurse researcher. Estrella earned her Doctor of Nursing Practice (Leadership and Systems Management) from Touro University, her Masters in Public Health Education and Health Promotion from the University of Nevada, Masters in Nursing at the University of the Philippines and her Bachelor’s of Science in Nursing from St. Paul College of Nursing. Estrella specializes in the systems wide development, implementation and evaluation of quality/performance improvement programs using evidenced based methodologies. Her topics of expertise are evidence based practice, translation research, leadership, wellness/health promotion, cardiovascular nursing, infection control and sepsis. She’s a member of the Emergency Nurses Association, Sigma Theta Tau, and Society of Critical Care Medicine. She has received numerous awards including being one of the first five national nursing faculty scholar of the Johnson and Johnson and American Association of Colleges of Nursing and a two- year research mentee scholarship from the National Coalition of Ethnic Minority Nurses and AETNA. She has presented in numerous national and international conferences including an upcoming Emergency Medicine education mission in Vietnam which she hopes to expand in several Asian countries.
MICHAEL GERARDI, MD, FACEP
Michael Gerardi, MD, FACEP is faculty in the Department of Emergency Medicine, Morristown Memorial Hospital and the Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine of the Goryeb Children’s Hospital at Morristown Memorial Hospital (MMH) and Atlantic Health. He is an Associate Professor of Emergency Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He completed his B.S. and M.D. at Georgetown University and his residencies in Internal Medicine and Pediatrics at Emory University. He is Board Certified in Internal Medicine, Emergency Medicine, and Pediatric Emergency Medicine. Dr. Gerardi also currently serves on the ACEP Board of Directors.
PETER VICCELLIO, MD, FACEP
Peter Viccellio, MD, FACEP is Vice Chairman and Clinical Director of the Emergency Department at State University of New York at Stony Brook, School of Medicine. Under his leadership, Emergency Medicine became a Department in the Medical School. He also served as the department's first residency director. Known for his engaging teaching style, Dr. Viccellio received the Aesculapius Award for Excellence in Teaching from the SUNY School of Medicine in 2003. Dr. Viccellio is the editor of Handbook of Toxicology (Lippincott & Raven). His areas of research include emergency department overcrowding, bioterrorism, medical errors, cervical spine injuries and residency education.
GHAZALA SHARIEFF, MD, FACEP, FAAP, FAAEM
Ghazala Sharieff, MD, FACEP, FAAP, FAAEM is the Medical Director of the San Diego Rady Children’s Hospital Emergency Care Center and the Director of Pediatric Emergency Medicine at Palomar-Pomerado Health System. She holds an Associate Clinical Professor appointment with Children’s Hospital and Health Center at the University of California, San Diego. She is a diplomate of both the American Board of Pediatrics and the American Board of Emergency Medicine. She is a Fellow in the American College of Emergency Physicians, the American Academy of Emergency Medicine and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
MICHAEL FRANK, MD, JD, FACEP, FCLM
Michael Frank, MD, JD, FACEP, FCLM is General Counsel and Director of Risk Management for Emergency Medicine Physicians (EMP) and Emergency Physicians Medical Group (EPMG). He is a diplomate of the American Board of Emergency Medicine and practices emergency medicine, while devoting most of his professional efforts to the management of the legal affairs of EMP and EPMG. He is a member of numerous medical and legal professional societies.
